How To Find Your True Calling
Are true callings really found? Finding implies the action of searching as if an already existing true calling is waiting to be found.
But what if determining your true calling was more effectively invited than found? What action would inspire a calling to reveal itself? Or is it initially less doing and more being a certain way that brings a calling forth?
In my next post I’ll share more detail of what participants at the Big Link Rally in Pittsburgh on January 2 will be doing. But inspired doing comes first from aligned being.
Our main objective is to reconnect the natural link between authenticity (expressed true calling) and abundance. I have come to believe that without being a certain way one has to struggle unnecessarily in the physical-action-doing realm.
This is a powerful focusing question. How do I want to be while I’m in the midst of bringing my calling forth?
These being qualities are conducive to finding and validating your true calling.
1). Be powerfully present in dialogue with your conscious self.
2). Be open and receptive to new ways of seeing themes and connections.
3). Be courageous enough to accept what is, both now and once your calling arrives.
4). Be carefree, natural and confidently expectant of your true calling’s arrival.
5). Be unconditionally supportive of yourself and others.
6). Be respectful of the sacred nature of calling.
7). Be connected at a heart level with others who hold the same intention.
8). Be willing to trust exercises and processes designed for insight creation.
9). Be authentically individual especially in the face of social conformity.
Let’s talk about this. Which of these nine qualities come natural to you and which do you want to become more aware of as you welcome your true calling?

After years of personal struggle and work with hundreds of coaching clients, I've come to understand that identifying one's true calling is primarily a spiritual process. Regardless of individual religious beliefs, this process must be approached with the reverence and respect that it deserves.
Great post, Tom – very deep!
I think it’s easier for one to be patient and express #4 when they have a broad idea and need to refine it.
And I love #9.
Blessings,
Keena
Hi Keena,
Gosh I hope it’s not too deep sop that folks won’t get it. I agree number 4 takes some faith that you are in the midst of the process. But nothing really stirs momentum without the faith that it’s coming. I also have a lot of fun with number nine being my wild ass self. Show me some appropriateness and I’ll push against it with my individuality.
Hi Tom,
I think #9 “Be authentically individual especially in the face of social conformity.” is the tricky one for me (and it feels like it always has been).
I guess it is the expression of it. Eg. there are some “guru’s” whose stuff I found naff and ordinary, others who are just plain wrong, and others who are so confused that I think they do a disservice to their followers. Sometimes I’m tempted to flame them, but this leads to people defending them and won’t help people change in my experience. So I tend to ignore these people and just do my own stuff and direct people to those who I think are producing great stuff.
So I don’t define myself against others and their conformity. But sometimes I’m still tempted.
Tom, your positive spirit is nothing short of infectious, inspiring and uplifting. you’re a true example of live from a heart level and it really shines through.
Jan 2nd, what a perfect date to start on a great new adventure! Wish I could be there, but in spirit I will and I’m sure I’ll feel the good vibes all the way down here in Texas.
Evan – Being vulnerable enough to freely express in the face of appropriateness of what “they” think is one of the greatest challenges of living authentically. Since we are all connected when we don’t go along we sometimes feel like we are breaking that connection. But a connection to those who are hiding their true selves is a weak one. We are much better off connecting through the vulnerability of our hearts in service to those who want that greater connection.
Jannie – I appreciate your recognition of my true expression and I joyously accept your good vibes regardless of distance.
The one I think is the most natural for me is “Be authentically individual especially in the face of social conformity.” Sometimes this gets me into trouble too. The one I struggle with the most is “Be courageous enough to accept what is, both now and once your calling arrives.” I tend to want what I want. Accepting something different than that is difficult for me.
#4 is the one I think requires the most courage. With so many financial commitments and personal obligation, I often wonder if my true calling’s going to arrive and it calls for serious life altering changes. Changes that may not garner unconditional support from loved ones.
Laurie – Accepting what is confounds many of us. Obviously that’s the only place from which we can grow and change but it is a challenge. I accept by thinking about the alternative – resistance and that never works.
Kenny – Yes I understand that. Others will take their cue from your enthusiasm and confidence. If you want their blessing then you must be the strong and dedicated one. Keep saying the true calling prayer with great faith. Keep working the compass points in the guidebook. Then when you get that great realization -jump on it with action.
