Recognize Your Power For Good
I understand that your fear around the responsibility of actually following a true calling. I’ve felt that fear and it shifts once you recognize your power for good.
Some of you fear your capacity to follow through and succeed. Some of you question if you’re wise enough or strong enough to make a difference.
Some of you are skeptical that such a thing as a true calling even exists for you. As a skeptic, are you afraid of your power so you deny the existence of something as sacred as a personal vocation?
Really, what’s your excuse? Do you want to believe in the existence of a true calling for you?
Have you been hiding from your power? Have you been running from it? Really, there is nothing to fear.
There is nothing to fear because the power isn’t within your calling. The power is within you.
I’ve been doing a lot of deep thinking around the essence of my work. I’ve been really digging into the core quality that fulfilled clients feel from working with me.
I want as many folks as possible to work and live their true callings because of the compounding nature of calling. True calling is the most powerful gift that keeps on giving.
What could be better than experiencing people who are wild about their work all day long? But also by working a calling we become wealthier and increase our capacity and generosity in direct service to others.
But let’s not talk about them. Let’s talk about you.
How confident are you of your true power?
I’m talking about your basic human power of creation. The power that allows you to create the life you most want to live.
Here’s what I’ve come to understand about the dynamic value of my work.
1). I inspire personal recognition of your own powerful core self.
2). I provide guidance to the clarity of your personal true calling.
3). As a result of the above recognitions you boldly express authentically, in service to others and that creates the value that others pay for.
Please notice the order of the progression.
Please understand that before prosperity comes clarity of calling and before clarity of calling comes recognition of power.
Money is a by-product of enthusiastic, authentic expression.
Expressing authentically in every way is your true calling. But before that expression stands a chance of being heard it must be identified by you and presented well so that others will see it as something they want.
But even all that isn’t enough if you don’t first step into your place of power and accept the responsibility to serve that comes with that freedom.
You can’t step into your power without being aware that you have it. Your awareness comes from recognizing, realizing and remembering that you have a capacity for greatness.
That capacity was meant to serve you and serve those whom you serve and it does no one any good if you do not fully exercise it. By recognizing your power you fulfill your sacred covenant represented by the gift of your individuality.
I know you’re afraid. We are all afraid at the point of our power, especially when we begin to grasp the enormity of our reach and the thousands of people we can positively influence.
But I’m here to tell you that the fear shifts once you commit to serving through the vehicle of your true calling.
Fear shifts when you first recognize your power and ask to remember all the good that was meant for you and for those you most want to serve.

After years of personal struggle and work with hundreds of coaching clients, I've come to understand that identifying one's true calling is primarily a spiritual process. Regardless of individual religious beliefs, this process must be approached with the reverence and respect that it deserves.
Fear is one of the emotions I believe should be used only by instinct. Unfortunately the fear we are talking about is something that society trained us for, and in my opinion it should be avoided. Great article.
Oscar – Yep familiar old conditioning fear is so ingrained that avoiding it would work if we could segregate every kid from society and raise them in a bubble of love and respect. I don’t think that avoidance works well for us adults. We are better off to bump up our awareness so that we can see the slimy fears for the insidious little devils that they are.
I think that this is something that so few touch on. We know that we have this inside us, but we refuse to admit that we are afraid of the power and the responsibility that comes with it. So, in denial, it gets stuffed back into the recesses of our minds and lives, collecting dust and cobwebs. Many of us die with our music still in us. That is the greatest tragedy there is!
We have to step into our power and remove our limitations to get to our essence. We can do these ourselves. But we don’t. We could create a world that is better for our having been here. But we don’t. Why? Because we don’t know how to start and we don’t have the support we need to overcome the obstacles we have presented to ourselves.
And I know, Tom, this is where you come in!
Keena – Yes it is a tragedy and I agree perhaps life’s greatest one. We spend half of our waking hours at work and then act like we can settle for less. Fear creates compromise and that’s just one big lie that we tell ourselves. Thanks for endorsing this message with all of your heart. It’s my mission to support those who want to stand tall and live free by expressing their music before they die. How can I help you? Yes you, anyone? Have you the courage to even consider what your life could be?
Fear shifts when you poke at it, test it and shine your light on it. More and more frequently, fear shifts to awe and gratitude when I recognize my power to make a difference for others. Sometimes it’s through my work, sometimes it’s by listening, sometimes it’s by connecting one person with another, sometimes it’s by standing firm in my beliefs – but at all times it’s me being me.
We can – and must – create our own bubble of love and respect to live in. Filling your life with people who value you is one obvious way, but saying no and distancing yourself from unsupportive people and situations are part of it, too.
I’m looking forward to the Big Link Rally because I’ll be able to expand my network of support and offer that same support to others. Watch I don’t try to stuff you all in my suitcase and bring you back home with me!!
Suzanne – I admire your courage to stand tall and say no. No is a complete sentence when it’s backed with conviction. How do you know that others won’t try to stowaway in your suitcase after they experience your big heart at the rally?
I’d say that is the more likely scenario. Glad to have you in my bubble.
Dear Tom, I really, really like this post! I was once fearful of my capacity, my potential, my power, my freedom and the enormous responsibility that goes with it. But the thing is, once you follow your calling, your bliss, your passion and what feels to be the right path for you, amazingly, everything else seems to work out.
Tom,
I’ve read your post several times and I’m trying to think of a response but its not coming to me. Instead I tried to experience “no
fear” during the course of my day by going against my norms and forcing myself to go beyond my comfort zone. For example I struck up a business conversation on my flight with the stranger next to me, I traveled to Duke University on a whim and went to a baskball game while there, I went out to diner at a bar
even though I was whipped from a long day. Typically I might not have
done any of these things but I wanted to practice doing what I wanted not what was comfortable and easy. I assume the journey to find one’s poweris going to require a lot of practice.
Belinda – Welcome! Thank you for sharing your strength with us. Yes when the path is true things do work out and it’s always powerful to hear it form someone like you who has confidently followed through.
Scott – Welcome. I appreciate you sharing that with us. You are correct. Practice living the way you want to live. Practice living as if you already are aware of your power. Practice living as if you’ve made the right aligned choices and the practice of being fearless will help you to come into your power.
You are strong and ready to identify your bliss and to create it. If you were not capable of it, you would never have come up with the idea.
Hi Tom,
You nailed it with this post. What I got out of it is we first have to meet our fears head on, not worry about what others think, and in all we do, be serving others with our good works.
When I think of times I was only thinking of myself, no matter what happened, I never got as much joy out of a situation as when I instead used my time and/or energies to help or support others. I mean, how can you even put a price on those feelings? I want to describe them as “warm fuzzies”, but it’s more than that as the feeling goes down to my core.
I love the mission you’re on, Tom. You have found your true calling and because it brings you so much joy, you’re willing to pass your knowledge on to others. Although I won’t be at your Big Link Rally, I’m guessing the attendees won’t be the same when they leave. Kudos to you for all you do.
Barbara – Yes you are correct. Without strong evidence of serving others it’s not likely that we are working a calling. We must serve others but tat the same time not care what they say or think about us. Thanks for your continued interest and support. Damn right those folks will leave the rally changed. I’m pumped!
Tom – Very interesting (and you sure are motivating!). Of course, all of this is true. I especially agree with you that finding our calling is a spiritual process. We are all looking to tap in to that divine calling that makes us authentic and happy and empowered, overcoming all of our fears in the process. But I am still not sure if the perfection of a true calling exists. Maybe I view it more as a process than an arrival. I have achieved and accomplished quite a lot, and am satisfied with it, but still feel I have more to do, more to become. So maybe the point is to simply keep growing.
Bradley – Welcome. Yep you’re right about that we are never complete. Even callings require continued tweaking and adjusting so that they serve others better and fulfill our desires more completely. Perfection in a calling? Perhaps not but I have seen those who feel that way and I’ve come close in my own calling. Like you I don’t believe that a calling is some magical end point where everything looks and smells like bliss. But it can get to the point of strong knowing where fears are simply cast aside in service to advancing ones calling. That’s where I am now and it feels very light and refreshing.
Tom,
I have read your post a number of times pondering the possibilties of commenting in a profound way. I finally found it! Your title, “Recognize your power for good” speaks volumes.
In that recognition I hope to experience the shift you mention here, “I’ve felt that fear and it shifts once you recognize your power for good.” Could it be that simple? I have had moments when I recognized my power for good (others have agreed). How do I connect that recognition and my desire to serve others with abundance and prosperity?
John
John – You connect your power for good and others looking for your value with action. What else could possibly work but to get into play? The key is to ask what can I do now? There is always something that anyone can do now. Do that and your perspective changes so that you can now see the next thing and the next. And yes a calling will bring you alive like nothing else. It feels like coming home to a part of yourself that you always knew was there but had yet to experience. Kind of like when the first time a good woman saw something in you that you hadn’t yet seen in yourself. A love affair with our own work is something that we should never deny ourselves.
Tom, You and I have the same mission: to help others bring their gifts and talents into the world and not “die with the music inside”.
I appreciate your statement: “Please understand that before prosperity comes clarity of calling and before clarity of calling comes recognition of power.” That is so true! I also find that the biggest hurdle for most of my clients is to step into and own their power, their inner truth. We are conditioned by our culture to view work as something to be endured (nose to the grindstone) rather than to view work as an expression of our authentic self. It is a scary thing for most of us to shift that belief and take a stand to “make our own music”.
I enjoy your blog! Thanks! Dee, http://www.careerlifecoaching.com
Dee – Welcome. I’m always delighted to meet a fellow coach especially one on the same mission. Yep society certainly has created many twisted beliefs about what work is and sometimes I also find that my coaching clients http://www.CoreU.com need to toss it all our and begin fresh following their alignment from within. The music within is there, we simply need to listen for it and honor it.
Tom,
What I love about you is how you “walk your talk.” Your passion and enthusiasm shout right through my computer screen.
Hi Tom! I am fast approaching a place where we will make some major decisions about the direction of our company. There are several we could take so moving forward with boldness is on my radar screen. We will be researching and gathering information to make our decision before we make our move. The whole thing is scary but exciting. I don’t want to move too fast but I don’t want to wait too long and miss out on what could be. I’m shaking in my boots to think about it all!
Tess – Thanks so much. That means a lot to me. I used to sign all of my correspondence with, Enthusiastically Yours,
I love that about life and life is to be loved. Bright and warm glowings back at you.
Laurie – Sounds like a great shaking indeed. You can always adjust. Fear not, get your ducks in a row and then imagine living the new direction and see how that feels in your body. I have confidence in you.
